CONCRETE MASONRY UNIT(C.M.U)

A concrete masonry unit also known as hollow block or cinder block is a rectangular block used in building and construction. They have hollow cores and are precast products. They are considered “green” or environmentally friendly. The blocks are made from sustainable resources that are recyclable. See below a picture of a wall done with the hollow blocks.

Advantages

  1. Rapid execution of work.

They are uniform and regular in size and shape and are also light in weight thus facilitating rapid execution of works.

  1. Reduces construction costs.

Very little mortar is used on the joints of the hollow blocks thus saving on construction materials

  1. Good bonding of mortar and plaster.

Presence of rough surfaces on concrete blocks provides a good bonding of mortar and plaster.

  1. Better insulation properties.

They have better insulating properties against heat, sound and dampness. This is due to their hollow cores.

  1. Better usage and strength.

Hollow blocks have good compressive strength making them suitable for installation of heavy wall compartments and cabinets. Presence of hollow space makes it easier to pass electrical and plumbing fixtures as opposed to solid blocks where the mason has to chisel.
